Selecting organizations in college
In college, students want to be associated with different groups and organizations. Some people choose to be on the basketball team, cheerleading squad, or many more organizations. It is important for you to select wisely upon thinking about joining organizations. The following will give you guidelines to follow when seeking a organization or a club that you want to join.
- Know your interest - Many people join groups because it's just something to do. Find a group that you will not only be involved in but also enjoy. Once you have joined a group, your face becomes better known by others, which means you need to be selective in which organizations will best represent you and your character.
- Plan self goals for the organization - It is great to want become involved in a group; however, have plans to advance in the organization. If you are a freshman, plan by junior or senior year to become president of the club. Make sure that you are on the staff of the organization in order for you to progress as the years move on.
- School comes first - The main purpose of attending school is for you to receive an education. When you become active in an organization, you may tend to forget about school. Don't join any organization that will encourage you to drop out of school to do the organization's work full time. There will be plenty of chances to work full time with your group outside of school during breaks or once you have graduated.
- Have critical thinking of development - Always have new ideas for the group. If the group meets twice a week, you need to have plans for both meetings and bring them to the group as a whole. Take the initiative to find outside work to do in the area. Being in touch with the community is always good for your organization's name.
